Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy
The addition to this historic Chicago Public School project in the Pullman neighborhood includes an auditorium, natatorium, and gymnasium in two separate wings. The additions are designed to meet LEED for Schools standards and are sited to allow for good acoustic separation between the new wings and the historic building. Both wings have green roofs, which bring acoustic benefits as well as LEED points. The 500-seat auditorium is designed to be flexible for all types of performances without requiring specific acoustic elements to be shifted between uses. The sole specific element is an orchestra shell that can be easily moved in and out of place. The natatorium includes a pool with full competition capabilities, an underwater sound system, and a viewing gallery.
