With its unusual octagonal plan and heroic structure, Barbican Concert Hall could not succeed
acoustically by the traditional rules. The approach, instead, was to build upon the hall's strengths,
which lay in clarity, presence, and impact rather than reverberance. A new, metal-clad ceiling and canopy system yields lauded acoustic gains while also expanding the technical capabilities of the hall.
