Carl could be found haunting construction sites at the age of seven and can trace a path through after-school architectural jobs, and a Bachelor of Architecture degree with honors from Virginia Tech. Specialization in acoustics came in 1995 after a dozen years as a licensed architect in Chicago. His broad background in design and technical architecture as well as historic preservation adds great depth to his consulting in acoustics. He has presented his work at conferences held by the Acoustical Society of America and the Institute of Acoustics in the United Kingdom, and he lectures architectural and acoustics classes at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

In his eleven years at the renowned Kirkegaard Associates, he carried design responsibility for many music and theater performance and educational spaces.
