Carl could be found haunting construction sites at the age of seven and can trace a path through after-school architectural jobs and a Bachelor of Architecture degree with honors from Virginia Tech. Specialization in acoustics came in 1995 after a dozen years as a licensed architect in Chicago. His broad background in design and technical architecture as well as historic preservation adds great depth to his consulting in acoustics. He has presented his work at conferences held by the Acoustical Society of America and the Institute of Acoustics in the United Kingdom, and he has lectured architectural and acoustics classes at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Virginia Tech, Illinois Institute of Technology and Cambridge University.

In Carl’s eleven years at the renowned acoustics consulting firm Kirkegaard Associates, he carried design responsibility for many music and theater performance and educational spaces. He also developed the technical design for a modular orchestra riser system now in use by orchestras in Chicago, Baltimore, Washington, Pittsburgh, Liverpool, and Kuala Lumpur.
