Andrew’s musical education began in church, where piano, praise band, and pipe organ all got equal time. As organist one Sunday, in a moment that says much about his approach to life, he adapted his high school’s fight song on the fly as the offertory and was still allowed to return the next Sunday – it was that good. Clearly pivotal to his high school’s music life, he sang in choral ensembles, played orchestral piano, contrabass clarinet (“because they had one”) and bass drum in the marching band (where he learned the fight song), and was a denizen of the orchestra pit playing nearly any instrument they needed him to play. Along the way, he discovered “behind the scenes” musicianship, becoming adept at audio and lighting design and working summer festivals with a local audio firm.
While this interest in all aspects of the stage began in music, theatre gradually captured more and more of his interest. In his sophomore year at Western Michigan University, he plunged into the family of the theatre and found true happiness, loading up his class schedule with theatre tech and acting (with a good bit of science mixed in), earning a BA in Theatre Arts. After an internship at La Jolla Playhouse in California, he polished off his bonafides at Yale, where he received an MFA in Sound Design and Composition.
After school, he adventured in the world of sound and AV design, working at Guild Hall in East Hampton, New York, as a sound designer, pivoting to AV systems design and theatre consulting for Auerbach Pollock Friedlander, then application support for French audio manufacturer L-Acoustics (with attendant roaming around the wine countries of France and California) before turning his attention back to systems design at acoustics consultant Jaffe Holden, amassing unimpeachable technical expertise and wisdom. At Threshold, he is a leader of our AV group, applying his worldliness and adventurous spirit to our projects far and wide.
