columbia college chicago, media production center
Studio Gang Architects
The first new building ever constructed by the college is universally accessible and serves its impressive film and video department and interactive arts program in the School of Media Arts. Two soundstages, a motion capture studio, and classrooms give the college space to expand its horizons. Vegetative roof systems meet Chicago green-building requirements, improve sound isolation from the nearby CTA and freight tracks, and contribute to the project’s LEED Gold certification.
Building-wide AV infrastructure allows faculty to monitor activity in the soundstages as classroom material, using overview cameras controlled from the classrooms feeds from the production cameras themselves. Student work can be projected on exterior walls, screened with 5.1 surround sound on an LED wall for the interior lobby amphitheatre, or streamed online.
The LED wall can also be turned toward the street as an un-missable billboard for the College’s art. Ingenious switching allows it to be separated into as many as 7 vertically oriented displays, providing tall, narrow ‘windows’ into the various production spaces and offering unusual aspect ratios for students to explore.
