Muchin College Preparatory School is the first of the Noble Network of Charter Schools to be located in a renovated high-rise in Chicago’s Loop, and achieved LEED Gold certification.
Glazing was used in classroom walls along the corridors to bring light into the center of the floor plates, while wall absorption opposite the glass prevents the rooms from becoming too live.
Since large and noisy existing mechanical systems could not be moved, ductwork was refitted with attenuators, walls around the air handling units were beefed up, and non-sensitive spaces arranged around them to provide buffer spaces. Some adjacencies couldn’t be fixed through planning - the weight and fitness rooms above the administrative offices required the entire floor to be raised on fiberglass pads to minimize the intrusion of dance classes and dropped free weights.
